Introduction

Thank you for purchasing the Team Thunder Helicopter Gunship Simulator.

Team Thunder was developed by only one person and it took more than 3 years to complete, involving almost 8,000 hours of development time and several thousands lines of code. For this to be possible while maintaining a full-time job means getting up before 5am and going to bed after midnight almost every day. I say ‘almost, because on some days it meant getting up before 4am or heading for bed after 1am.

The game was developed with great passion. Following the app review process the age rating for the game is 10-13+ for mild/infrequent occurrences of violence. I designed it so there are no soldiers running around and you will not see any blood. Teenage boys love to fly around and blow up the little tanks and pickup trucks. To my surprise, I discovered that girls also love the game.

Team Thunder really shines when playing on two devices over WiFi, and my hope is that you will find thorough enjoyment playing the game whenever you want to kill some time sucn as in the dentist waiting room, but moreso playing the missions coop with someone else.

This game is designed to work over WiFi on a local-area-network (LAN) and internet access isn’t required as long as the two devices are on the same LAN. The networking has been designed to connect automatically. (Alternatively, one would have to type in IP addresses manually, or connect to a server.)

More missions, helicopters and features will be added in the future for free and there are a few very exciting surprises in the development pipeline that you will love.

Thank you again for playing this game.

Have fun flying, Ace.

Hints and WiFi Quick Start Guide

Here are some hints to help you get started:

GENERAL
At present there are 10 missions in the game and more will be added soon.
The first two missions are scripted tutorials to learn the basic interface. You can skip them and go directly to mission 3.
Missions 4 and higher are available after successfully completing their respective predecessors.
The last mission is a free flight mode for practicing aerobatics or just flying around with no enemies.
Explore the Settings. Setting engine startup to "running" and Mode to "Expert" will get you there faster!

PLAYING A WiFi LAN GAME:
Make sure both devices are on the same WiFi router or hotspot.
From the main menu select the mission number and a helicopter.
On Device 1 click "WiFi”, then "Host Game" followed by "Auto”.
Select whether you want to play in the Pilot or Gunner seat.
On Device 2 click "WiFi" and "Join Game" followed by "Auto".
The host (Device 1) decides which helo, mission and cockpit seat.
If connected a green light will show on both devices.
If the top light stays red, hit 'Reset | Disconnect" on both devices and try again starting at (a) above
To select a different helicopter (only the host can) or make changes in the settings, hit "Main Menu" and go from there. When finished return to the Main Menu and select "Back to WiFi Game" to return to the Networked Game Screen. All this can be done without disconnecting.
The host can start the game once Device 2 switches from "Not Ready" to "Ready". The other light will then also turn green.

If networking doesn’t want to connect, close the app on each device. Then restart the apps and try again.

As a last resort, try connecting by choosing “Manual” in step (c). Each devices will show its own IP address on the LAN network, which must then be typed into the other device. It shouldn’t be necessary to change the Port, nevertheless the port numbers must match.

Main Menu

From here you can:

Select the mission
Select the helicopter
Go to the Settings menu
Go to the WiFi Game menu
Play a single player game

To use the WiFi menu, you need another device with Team Thunder installed and both devices need to be WiFi connected to the same network (in other words they are on the same router).

Settings Menu

From here you can:

Change the control scheme
Adjust Sound Effects volume
Adjust Engine Sounds volume
Select whether an engine startup sequence plays at the beginning of the mission or if the engines will be running.
Select flight mode:
- Novice mode is easy, but doesn’t allow aerobatics.
- Expert mode is harder, but allows the helicopter to perform advanced maneuvers.

Using tilt controls.

A typcial arrangement may be to put the cyclic on tilt. The power and yaw controls can then be on either the left or the right joysticks, or a combination.

To center the tilt controls while flying, touch the Objective Beacon Arrow.

Note that the Gunner doesn’t have the abilty to use tilt controls. This may be added to the game later.

WiFi Menu

From here you can:

Host a WiFi game
Join a WiFi game

This game feature requires two devices with the same version of Team Thunder installed
Both devices must be WiFi-connected to the same router and WiFi LAN network.
On device 1 choose “Host Game”
On device 2 choose “Join Game”
Select “Auto” on both devices within a few seconds of one another.
The top red light on each device will turn green.
The bottom lights will turn green once device 2 has also tapped the bottom button to show ‘Ready’.
If not, press “Reset | Disconnect” on both devices and try again from step 1. If this doesn’t work, close the apps and try again (double-tap the main button the front of the device and swipe the app to the side or top of the screen to close an app.) If it still doesn’t resolve the issue, try to reboot both devices and start again.
Instead of selecting “Auto” in step 5, you can also try to connect by pressing “Manual” on both devices. This time, each device will display it’s own IP address. Next to it is another box where an IP address can be typed in. Type in the other device’s IP address. The port numbers needn’t be changed, and they must be identical.
The “Main Menu” button allows you to return to the main menu without losing the connection. Only the host is able to modify the mission number, helicopter and cockpit seat arrangement. Both players can go into their respective Settings Menus, but only the host can decide if the engines will be running or not when the mission starts.
Once connected, mission after mission can be played in coop unless the ‘Exit Button’ followed by ‘Yes’ was used from within the game. That also ends any network connection.

Machine Gun

How to aim and fire the machine gun:

Tap anywhere on the camera viewer to move the gun in that direction. The gun camera has gyro stabilization built into it, so that the camera will attempt to hold it’s aim regardless of the helicopter movement as long as the direction is not too far out of the camera/gun’s reachable angles.

One can also drag a finger on the camera viewer to move the gun. The gun will move slowly if the finger is near the center of the screen and it will move faster the further finger placement is from center.

The camera is able to aim faster than the gun itself. A green circle indicates the current direction of the gun. When the large crosshair and the green indicator lign up, gun fire should hit close to the center of the crosshair.

Tap the machine gun fire button to shoot. You will hear the machine gun rattling off.

To reset the machine gun’s aim to look center-forward, tap the machine gun direction indicator at the bottom-center of the screen.

Missiles

How to use the smart missiles:

The gunship has sophisticated image recognition and processing power built into it that is also linked via satellites to intelligence centers at HQ.

The missiles depend on laser designation to hit targets with great accuracy over long distances. In order to use a missile, the laser must be on target for the duration of the missile’s flight.

A missiles will fly upwards, and then accelerate until it is almost directly above a target before it steers directly at the target. This way an enemy cannot hide behind a building, for example.

When a threat is detected, a red diamond wil appear over it. This means a target has been detected, but hasn’t been selected for laser designation yet. Numerous targets can be detected simultaneously, but only one target can be selected at any time.

To select the next target, press the target select button at the bottom-left of the screen. Keep pressing this button until you have selected the target that you wishto hit with a missile.

Once the desired target is selected, tap the missile button. The missile will launch and steer itself to the target as long as the target remains selected and in view on the gunner FLIR viewer.

There will be a brief waiting period before the next missile is ready to fire. This wait is due to the missile’s computer turning on and booting up before communicating with the laser designation and targeting systems.

Gunner - 3rd Person

By pressing the camera button, the gunner switches between FLIR and a 3rd person view of the helicopter.

On this screen, the gunner has no abilities.
